Diversity and Inclusivity in the Workplace

So here we are mid-way through 2020 and who would have thought it would have turned out like this!

At the usual New Year ‘look ahead’ in January, I don’t know of anyone who could have forecasted the events of the last 3 months.

But it is not just COVID 19 that has grabbed the headlines, the issue of equality and diversity, or lack of, has come back into focus.

Rightly so.

Racism is abhorrent and has no place in our world. Diversity and inclusivity are key to encouraging tolerance and understanding across society and I am heartened by how our industry has responded to recent events.

But there is still work to be done.

Here at Energylab we have a very diverse team, everyone comes from different backgrounds. We are very proud of the fact that many clients and collaborators say we are different and our diverse backgrounds are a factor in this. Regular readers of our blogs will know that we strongly believe having diversity is not only more reflective of our society, but is just plain good business sense. Our different backgrounds often mean different views and this contributes to healthy debate within the team to come to the best solutions.

However, what is also important is that every member of our team has joined us on their merits, not due to any positive discrimination ‘policy’. Our Founding Partner, Marian Ferguson, is not a big fan of positive discrimination. Although it has its merits, it can sometimes send out the wrong messages, that somehow that new team member got the job to ensure diversity quotas were met.

Marian has seen that first-hand many times in her career. “You only got the job because you are female” being a common taunt from male colleagues. Thankfully Marian proved them all wrong!

Even in these tough COVID times we remain a sound and successful business. Yes things have slowed, but the future is still looking good and that is down to having a great team around us, the proof being the majority of our business is repeat business or direct referrals.

Our diverse and loyal team have helped make that happen. We may all be from different backgrounds and we all have many different views, but what we do all agree on is our Mission Statement, Vision and Values – we are all proactive and solution driven. We really do things differently!
