Our client’s aim was to convert an existing car park they acquired into offices, while maintaining as much as the existing structure as possible. Energylab were appointed to design the CAT A mechanical and electrical systems to be as energy efficient and sustainable as possible, whilst configuring systems to be flexible for future tenants.
Repurposing an old building is rarely straightforward, and this project was no exception. Adapting the car park structure to suit a desirable office floorplate, maintaining adequate floor to ceiling height and integrating complex building services systems, such as heating/cooling, lighting, ventilation and life safety systems – these were just some of the challenges along the way. But we love a challenge, and through collaborating closely every step of the way with the whole project team, from the client, designers and through to the contractor, we ensured we effectively solved these challenges and met the brief.
The final solution was a refrigerant based system, with local ventilation to minimise service risers and maximise floor to ceiling heights with attractive exposed services ceiling.
For us, this was a project that embraced our passion for reuse and repurpose. It demonstrates that we don’t need to write these buildings off and demolish them. Instead, re-working the building through careful and clever design can be a much more sustainable solution. Our client now has exactly what they set out to achieve, a fully functioning and appealing office space designed in an entirely sustainable way.
